Cycling helps you stay active and physically fit.
Along with a healthy eating plan, cardiovascular activities are vital for staying physically fit. Also known as aerobic exercise, a cardio workout like cycling burns calories and helps to build muscular strength and endurance in your arms, legs and hips. Aerobic exercise also improves flexibility and mobility, and it helps to relieve joint stiffness and arthritis pain, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Cycling can reduce the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
Leading a healthy lifestyle can improve your quality of life and may even prolong it. Rhythmic, repetitive movements, such as pedaling a stationary bike or cycling outdoors, increases your heart rate and respiration and stimulates blood flow throughout the body. This reduces the risk of high blood pressure, heart attacks and stroke. Cardiovascular exercise also helps to prevent type 2 diabetes and can control blood glucose levels in those already diabetic. John Hopkins Medicine recommends at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise a day, five days a week.
Cycling boosts your mood and helps you sleep soundly.
Cycling can help keep your heart, lungs, and circulatory system healthy, but did you know it can also improve your emotional well-being? The Mayo Clinic notes that cardio activities like cycling help your brain to release endorphins, also known as the body’s “feel-good chemicals.” Psychology Today states, “cardio exercise significantly reduces anxiety and depression,” and includes cycling as a prime example of aerobic exercise. Additionally, cycling may help you fall asleep faster and achieve a better quality of sleep.
A healthy lifestyle includes cardiovascular exercise, and as you can see, riding a bike can be a rewarding workout for people of all ages and fitness levels. By participating in our Cycle4Change event, you will not only be developing healthy habits, but you will also be helping to improve and sustain the well-being of our community as we strive to eliminate health disparities.
